What Are D-SNPs?

D-SNPs — Dual Special Needs Plans — are a type of Medicare Advantage plan specifically designed for people who are eligible for both Medicare and Medicaid. These plans integrate the benefits of both programs into one coordinated plan, simplifying healthcare management and often providing extra benefits not available through standard Medicare.

In Virginia, D-SNPs are offered by private insurance companies approved by Medicare. Each plan has specific services and benefits tailored to people with both Medicare and Medicaid eligibility.

Most D-SNPs in Virginia have a $0 monthly premium. Medicaid may cover your Part B premium and most or all of your out-of-pocket costs.

What D-SNPs Typically Include

Dental Coverage

Enhanced dental benefits including cleanings, x-rays, and often major dental work not covered by standard Medicare.

Vision Coverage

Eye exams, eyeglasses, and contact lenses — benefits not included in Original Medicare.

Transportation

Rides to medical appointments — a major benefit for members who have difficulty getting to the doctor.

Care Coordination

A dedicated care team that coordinates between your Medicare and Medicaid services to ensure seamless coverage.

Prescription Coverage

Part D prescription drug coverage included, often with very low or $0 copays for most medications.

Extra Benefits

Some plans include over-the-counter allowances, meal delivery after hospitalization, and fitness memberships.
